WHERE & HOW IT ALL BEGAN
It all began when a young surfer from the small coastal town of Lorne decided to transform his annual new years eve chillout with close friends on the family farm into something a little bigger. With an extended invitaition to a bunch of bands and any one else who wanted to come along, a musical treat was in the making…
The inaugural Falls Festival in 1993 (then named Rock Above the Falls in an attempt to steer wayward travelers away from the turnoff to a popular nearby waterfall) was a one-night only affair and featured 9 bands including The Sharp, Cosmic Psychos, The Badloves, Nick Barker and Seaweed Gorillas. Tickets were just $20 and organisers expected around 5,000 punters to show up after ticket pre-sales were modest. But, with a sparkling 26 degree dayon 31 December, nearly 11,000 punters dropped in for the show and stretched the novice organisers to the limit, even to the extent of having to negotiate with neighboring farmers for the use of their land to accommodate the huge influx.
After a stunning dusk to darkness set by the bluesy Badloves, the double-bass twanging, The Sharp took the stage to a mixed reaction by the crowd. Clearly the majority of the crowd where there for local favourites the Cosmic Psychos who were at the height of their powers as they ripped out crunching renditions of massive crowd favourites such as “B.I.T.” and “She”s a Lost Cause”.
A touch of luck with the weather and a masterful performance by Cosmic Psychos allowed The Falls Festival to successfully touch down on the Australian live music landscape and ensured that at least 11,000 happy campers would return home to rave about their awesome new year”s experience down on the Falls farm.
